Pongwe beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Zanzibar, with an almost continuous coral reef creating a vast shallow lagoon, backed by broad white-sand beaches and endless groves of coconut palms.
The picture-perfect beaches are backed by nearby villages, whose people earn their living by fishing and seaweed farming in the lagoon. For many guests this ‘local experience’ is what makes Zanzibar so special.
One of the great joys of a stay on this coast is watching these villagers go in and out as part of the hypnotic tidal rhythm that dictates the pace of life on the island.
